Bernicia

Bernicia

Andrea Malcolm, Operational Director at Bernicia Social Housing Group, worked with Northumberland College's Business Development Team to recruit and train a number of apprentices. Read what Andrea has to say:

We have been dealing with Northumberland College for a number of years now for the training of our apprentices.

The college have supported us with recruitment of our apprentices, advertising the vacancies on the National Apprenticeship Service site. We currently have a number of apprentices in various construction trades and also in office based positions such as Customer Service and Accountancy.

We have a dedicated contact person at the college who we work closely with to ensure the Apprenticeship programmes meet our specific needs. We also work with the college to deliver any specific bespoke training in addition to the Apprenticeship training.

Since starting their Apprenticeships all of these young people have really developed their skills and confidence which is great to see.

Bernicia really value Apprenticeships, we believe apprentices are our future managers and therefore ensuring they are trained to a high standard is very important to us.

Blueline Taxis

Blueline Taxis

North Tyneside based private hire taxi operator, Blueline has trained over 120 drivers with bespoke training from Northumberland College.

When the taxi operator needed to recruit new drivers in order to supply its unmet demand for taxis they decided the recruitment process would provide the ideal opportunity to also incorporate an element of customer service training for its drivers.

Northumberland College offer a full range of business training solutions and also offer a free recruitment service so Blueline got in contact.

Frank Sims, Operations Manager of Blueline, said: "We were looking for training in customer service, dealing with difficult situations and also knowledge based training."

Northumberland College's services include developing bespoke training to exactly match employer needs.

Frank said: "We feel that having a professional body like Northumberland College deliver the training adds to the professionalism of our business.

"Over the past 12 months we have developed the training programme significantly into a flexible roll-on roll-off programme that has trained over 120 drivers. And we're confident that overtime we will be able to meet our demand and also increase business profitability."

George Swift, a new driver at Blueline, said: "The whole process was fabulous, form starting the course last September to driving for Blueline only took four weeks. The training was a great experience and covered medical knowledge to customer care and you can tell customers appreciate it."

Oliver's Tree Services

Oliver's Tree Services

David Oliver, Director of Oliver's Tree Services, worked with Northumberland College's Business Development Team to recruit and train two apprentices. Read what David has to say:

"We approached Northumberland College to recruit an apprentice. The college advertised the post on our behalf and as the quality of applications was so impressive we actually ended up recruiting two apprentices.

Our apprentices attend the Kirkley Hall Campus one day per week where they learn the theory about arboriculture and take part in practical activities and we provide the on-the-job experience the rest of the week.

The experience we give them on a day to day basis coupled with the knowledge and practical skills they gain at the college works really well and the apprentices' confidence has grown massively.

I'm delighted with the Apprenticeship programme and I'd recommend it to other employers."
